QUINTA DE VARGELLAS 1988
Um inverno cálido e pluvioso foi seguido por um período seco no início da primavera. Durante todo o mês de março não se registaram chuvas no Douro Superior, sendo a temperatura média de 20 º C, excecionalmente elevada para esta época do ano. Não choveu em agosto, e a segunda metade deste mês e a primeira semana de setembro foram extremamente quentes: a temperatura média destes dois meses foi de pouco menos de 27 ºC.

As condições do tempo foram ideais para a colheita, com dias quentes e ensolarados e noites frescas, sem que se registaram chuvas durante toda a vindima. Devido ao tempo muito quente antes da vindima, houve considerável desidratação do sumo que resultou em mostos mais concentrados com bom sabor e cor.

NOTAS DE PROVA: Fruta penetrante e madura com nariz rico a lembrar compota. Vinho macio e aveludado, com agradável volume e equilíbrio. A fruta é cheia, doce e ainda deliciosamente fresca. Imensa compota de ameixa, ameixa, passa e alcaçuz. Bebe-se muito bem agora.

Cor saturada média. Aqui está outro bouquet incomum, porém agradável, que apresenta imensas notas de “folhas e talos”. Encontramos igualmente fragrâncias de terra, pimenta, chá verde, molho de soja e flores murchas. Muito bom na boca também. O 1988 é grande, rico, doce e mastigável, com uma viscosidade xaroposa. Está lindamente equilibrado, não sendo muito pesado ou excessivo. Muitos participantes pensam que é algo “austero” e “muito jovem”, mas uma minoria ruidosa discorda. Final muito cremoso, elegante e delicioso.

A warm wet winter was followed by a dry period in the early Spring. No rain fell at all in the Upper Douro in March, and the average temperature was 20ºC, which was unseasonably high for the time of year. No rain fell in August, and the second half of this month and the first week of September were extremely hot, the average temperature for these two months being just under 27ºC.

Weather conditions were ideal for the vintage with warm, sunny days and cool nights, and no rain fell at all during the harvest. Due to the very hot weather prior to the Vintage, there was considerable dehydration of the juice which resulted in more concentrated musts with good flavour and colour.

TASTING NOTES: Pungent, ripe fruit with rich jammy nose. Smooth, velvety wine with nice volume and balance. Fruit is full, luscious and delightfully fresh still. Lots of plum jam, prune and liquorice. Perfect drinking now.

Medium saturated color. Here’s another unusual yet pleasurable bouquet, which features lots of ´leaf and stem´notes. We also pick up scents of earth, pepper, green tea, soy sauce and decayed flowers. Very good in the mouth as well. The 1988 is big, rich, sweet, and chewy with a syrupy viscosity. It’s nicely balanced, not too heavy or over-the-top. Many participants think it’s somewhat “austere” and “too young”, but a vocal minority disagrees. Very creamy, elegant, delicious finish.
