“The 1997 vintage port is the most profound Quinta do Noval I have ever tasted (excluding their Nacional made from pre-phylloxera vines). The wine of the vintage, this black/purple-colored port boasts fabulous aromatics (espresso, blackberries, licorice, tar and flowers) followed by massive concentration, full body and levels of depth and richness that surpass every other port of the vintage save for its limited production sibling, the Nacional. Gorgeously sweet, stunningly concentrated and full-bodied, this port should be legendary. Quinta do Noval’s production normally approaches 4,000 cases, but in 1997, only 1,200 cases were produced, so it will be extremely limited in availability. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2035.”

Quinta do Noval 1997 Porto “Under the direction of Christian Seely, Noval has been undertaking an extensive replanting campaign. And with the backing of AXA, they have been able to do it while preserving the beautiful stone terraces that make this estate a treasured landmark in Pinhao. The contemporary srle of Noval, as exemplified by this plump ‘97, is pure Cima Corgo, dramatic and round, the dewy weight of a juicy droplet of fruit expanding in the mouth to a blast of flavor yet always discreet, balanced, without any rough edges. In fact, it’s so lovely and finely balanced right now that it’s remarkably easy to drink. I’ve been trained to seek out a more traditional style when blind-tasting Vintage Port, one that shows power and concentration all under wraps, potential rather than immediacy. Much has changed, however, in ‘94 and ‘97, and wines like this Noval are not only immediately delicious, but should prove worthwhile agers. Knowing the track record of this vineyard and the people behind the wine, I’m tempted to add a point or two to the score. It certainly should prove to be among the best wines of the vintage.”
