1810 (?) Madeira A.P.C. Cunha “Rumo da India” 75cl
Provavelmente engarrafada principios do século XX.

1810 (?) Madeira A.P.C. Cunha “Rumo da India” 75cl
Probably Bottled in start of siec. XX
According to information provided by the former owner of the bottle, it had been in the family’s possession for over 60 years. He also reported that he remembers that it had a small label that wrapped around the neck of the bottle and that has since been lost.
By comparative analysis with other examples with the same label and shape of the bottle shown here, this bottle is probably one of the rarest examples from the Madeira vineyard that made the trip to India and returned in cask and bottled by A.P. Cunha called “Rumo da India Madeira 1810”.
The Dutch East India Company used to collect barrels of Madeira wine and take them to India. The intense heat and constant movement of ships had a profound effect on the wine and resulted in Madeira becoming a fortified wine that is heated in “greenhouses” (heated chambers) to replicate the conditions of the long voyage to South.
The wine was possibly bottled at the beginning of the 20th century, corked and sealed with the bottler’s monogram “APC”, as can be seen in this example.
“There is a possible link between the “1810 Rumo da India” and the legendary “Dinner of the Three Emperors” that was held at the Café Anglais in Paris, France, on June 7, 1867.
The dinner was hosted by King William I of Prussia, who requested a special meal from chef Adolphe Dugléré, for which no expense was spared.
The guests of King William’s “Emperor” were Tsar Alexander II of Russia and his son the Tsarevitch (who later became Tsar Alexander III). The dinner was also attended by Otto von Bismarck who later became Chancellor of Germany.
Café Anglais cellar master Claudius Burdel oversaw the wine selection. The banquet consisted of 15 courses with 8 wines, served over eight hours, and cost 400 francs per person, which today is equivalent to more than €9,000.
The 8 wines included Château d’Yquem 1847, Château Margaux 1847 and Château Lafite 1848. Also on the wine list was “Madeira Retour de l’Inde 1810”. This could be the same wine I have in a bottle labeled “1810 Rumo da India Madeira”.
Even if this is not the Madeira that was served at dinner in June 1867, it is a wine worthy of an Emperor.”
